Five Everyday Things We Do That Ages Our Skin

There's no getting around the fact that our skin is aging.  As the largest organ in the body, we really should be treating our skin much better than we sometimes do. Between certain lifestyle choices - smoking, bad nutrition, and sunbathing, you know that sometimes we are our own worst enemy when it comes to caring for our skin. Even those who know plenty about skincare can make mistakes that inadvertently age our skin. To get and keep the best skin possible, you should avoid these five mistakes that can age your skin.

  1. Being too rough with your face.  On a daily basis, the facial skin gets a workout. Whether it’s pulling on the side of your eyes while applying eyeliner or rubbing your face dry with a towel, treating the skin roughly can cause premature wrinkles and sagging. When drying your face or applying makeup, always be gentle, and pat—don’t rub—skin dry. And, remember, don’t make those faces your Mother warned you about. Turn that frown upside down!

  2. Over-exfoliating. This is a mistake that happens to even the most ardent skincare junkies. Over-exfoliating can cause irritation and inflammation and your skin may start trying to protect itself by forming an even thicker layer of dead skin cells on the surface, leading to premature aging in the long run. The skin regenerates overnight, so the best time to exfoliate is in the morning (in the shower). How and what you use to exfoliate varies be it a facial brush, scrub or mask. How often you need to exfoliate largely depends on skin type. You may only need to do it once or twice per week. If you’re looking for more thorough exfoliation, a microdermabrasion or carbon laser facial might be the right choice for you.

  3. Failing to wear sunscreen after a certain age. Many women past a certain age stop wearing sunscreen every day, assuming that UV damage was sustained in their 20s. However, UV damage continues to impact the way our skin looks our entire lives, so it’s best to continue wearing sunscreen throughout your life to prevent more wrinkles from forming. This is especially true for people living at higher altitudes where the sun is more intense, and where active outdoor lifestyles are common place.

  4. Using a harsh cleanser. Most skin types require only a gentle cleanser to remove makeup. Using a harsh cleanser can over-dry the skin, and dry skin is aging skin. Our skin tends to lose moisture as we age anyway, so be sure not to over-dry it with a cleanser that’s too harsh for your skin type. If you’re uncertain about what type of cleanser you should be using, you could ask your esthetician for a recommendation.

  5. Not giving your products enough time to work. Don’t be in too much of a hurry when using anti-aging products. Younger looking skin takes time. Although, it can feel disappointing when a product doesn’t change our skin within a week or two, but it usually takes a month or more for anti-aging products, such as retinol, to produce visible results on the skin. Wait at least six weeks to see change, unless the product is causing an adverse reaction. Remember, everyday our skin ages, so using a product that helps to slow that process down means you’re on the right track.

If you see yourself making any of these mistakes, it's not too late to stop. It's true that aging cannot be reversed, but there are effective ways to manage the aging process. If you'd like to know more about how you can manage your skin's aging condition, let us be your guide.
